Jose Atienza Jr., Jojo to friends and associates, was an actor, director, screenwriter, and TVC director.
Known for his professionalism and mentorship in the advertising world, his heart was in the performing arts. He acted in films, including supporting roles in Bagets 2 (1984), Crying Ladies (2003), and La Visa Loca (2005), and co-wrote the screenplay for Mula Noon Hanggang Ngayon (1996) with Khryss Adalia, Shaira Mella Salvador, and Mel Mendoza-Del Rosario.
He also composed the theme song for Miracle of Love (1982), co-written with Lutgardo Labad and Lucien Letaba, and served as assistant director for the short films Silup (2011) and Oh! Pa Ra Sa Ta U Wa Yeah! (2011).
But Atienza was primarily known for his contributions to Philippine theatre, especially in his capacity as senior artist-teacher of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA). He was part of various stage productions, including most recently Walang Himala, Noli at Fili Dekada 2000, Ang Buhay ni Galileo, and Ang Post Office.
He won the award for Outstanding Male Featured Performance in a Play for William in the 2011 Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards.
Atienza died of COVID-19 at the age of 59.
Fellow assistant director Jules Dacanay said: “Jojo was a consummate man of action and compassion. His many years in PETA as a senior teacher/artist attest to that. He generously shared his skills and talent in advertising for forty years. He worked with all the giants of the industry, from movie stars to babies, directors both young and seasoned, brands of all shapes and sizes.”
