Musician, Musical Director, Professor
March 20, 1937 – September 8, 2021
Roger J. Llado was a musician, trumpet-player, principal trumpet, band leader, musical director, conductor, teacher, and professor who passed away at the age of 84. He was a former Principal Trumpet of Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also played with the Manila Symphony Orchestra, Manila Brass Quintet, The Whitby Concert Brass Band (Canada), Durham Chamber Orchestra (Canada), Bit’s N Pieces Band (Hong Kong), and Philippine Youth Symphonic Band.
As a trumpet player, he collaborated and worked with various artists such as Fidel Calalang, Lino Rivera, and Maximillian Antig. Mr. Lllado appeared in the documentary entitled Pinoy Jazz: The Story of Jazz in the Philippines that narrates the development of jazz in the country. He also took part in Miss Saigon Manila and Sampung Mga Daliri concerts.
He taught and influenced Filipino musicians as a former Trumpet Professor at University of Santo Tomas (UST) Conservatory of Music and former Music Director of the UST Jazz Band. He meticulously guided his former students for his craft, and one of his students, named Pipo Cifra, expressed the impact of Mr. Lllado as a teacher, “He made us realize that nothing is freer than playing jazz. It was a body, mind, and soul-free experience for me when he included me in the UST Jazz Band as a keyboardist at one of UST Conservatory’s annual events called Sampung Mga Daliri. Very hip, cool Sir Roger Llado taught us how to be keen on dynamics, especially when you are playing with a jazz band‒ it doesn’t mean you all just play loudly… your heart will bring you to that special place.”
Oliver Bernardino Cura also expressed his sympathy for his former teacher: “Nakakalungkot po na balita ang inyong pagpanaw, Sir Roger Llado. You’ll be missed.”
The Philippine Trumpet Players Society recognized the contribution of Mr. Lllado to the Philippine jazz and music, “We would like to send our prayers for the soul of Maestro Roger Llado, a legendary trumpet player in his own right, a trumpet professor and an inspiration to all trumpet players/musicians everywhere.”
