Erineo Saquilayan Maliksi or better known as Ayong Maliksi was a politician in the Philippines and was born on the 25th of March 1938 in Imus, Cavite. He was a former Cavite governor (2001-2010). He selflessly served Cavite and the country in various capacities in his political career. He worked for over forty years as an excellent public servant.
Maliksi was a member of the House of Representatives, from 1998 to 2001 and from 2010 to 2013 and served as mayor of Imus, the capital of Cavite. He served as second district congressman. He was also chair of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office from 2015 to 2016.
Erineo “Ayong” Maliksi, former Cavite governor, died when he was 82 on February 24, 2021. His son, Imus City Mayor Emmanuel “Manny” Maliksi said that he was recovering from coronavirus and tested negative when his father suffered from cardiac arrest. He wrote in a Facebook post expressing that more than being a responsible public servant, Ayong was a loving father who also taught him how to lead and serve, “Ipinamalas mo hindi lamang sa buong bansa kundi na rin sa buong mundo ang puso ng isang Imuseño, at kagitingan ng tunay na Kabiteño.”
The mayor added to his statement, “Ikaw ang naghubog sa akin bilang isang lider na hindi tumatalikod sa tungkulin. Mula sa aking pagkabata, magpasa hanggang ngayon ay patuloy kong sinusundan ang mga yapak mo.”
To honor his life and legacy, the family of the late Cavite Governor Erineo ‘Ayong’ Maliksi and De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) signed two memorandum of agreement to establish a Professorial Chair and a Student Scholarship Endowment Fund. Vice President for Resource Generation Dr. Myrna F. Ramos delivered a message at the event, she enumerated some of his advocacies and achievements namely the recognition of Cavite as the “Historical Capital of the Philippines”, that Maliksi was the author of the observance of the Kalayaan Festival; an activity that calls for the unification among Caviteños and the observance of the Battle of Imus. She also enunciated that he was the architect of the Gawad Emilio Aguinaldo Award, he defended Cavite’s position against Bataan’s claim. Corregidor should belong to Cavite. He also allocated funds for the construction of the Imus Museum where Cavite Revolution visual arts are preserved and the rehabilitation of Tejeros Convention Hall where the first Philippine presidential election was held.
Maliksi will be remembered as a mentor to other leaders as well. Cavite leaders conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family and one of them is 6th District Representative Luis Ferrer IV. He expressed, “Maraming salamat po sa inyong taos pusong paglilingkod sa ating minamahal na probinsya.”
A statue of Ayong Maliksi was erected at the Imus National High School (also known as Dona Paula Guevarra Vda. De Marquez Memorial National High School). The statue was inaugurated last, June 7, 2021, to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary.
